WINONA, Minn. -— For Saint Mary's University senior Matt Rink (Rochester, Minn.), the baseball season hasn't even been over for 48 hours, while fellow senior Amy Edge's (Montfort, Wis.) fastpitch softball season is still very much under way.

Yet, the postseason honors have already begun for the Cardinals' twosome, as both Rink and Edge were named to the ESPN The Magazine Academic All-District V First Team in their respective sports.

The ESPN The Magazine Academic All-District team is part of the Academic All-America program, administered by the College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA). Top student-athletes from non-Division I programs in Minnesota, Wisconsin, Illinois, Indiana, Ontario and Manitoba are eligible for inclusion on the College Division district team. Student-athletes must have a cumulative grade-point average of at least 3.20 (4.0 scale) and have outstanding athletic credentials.

First-team members advance to the Academic All-America ballot, which is voted on by a select committee of CoSIDA members from across the country.

It was the third straight academic all-district honor for Edge, who was also named to the CoSIDA Academic All-America First Team a year ago, while Rink earned his first academic all-district honor.

Rink closed out his senior season as the Cardinals' offensive leader in virtually every offensive category, including batting average (.363), hits (37), triples (4), RBIs (29) and slugging percentage (.588). Boasting career highs in hits, triples and RBIs, Rink helped guide the Cardinals to a 16-15 overall record. A mathematics and accounting double-major, Rink also shared the team lead in multiple-hit and multiple-RBI games with 11 and eight, respectively.

Edge, meanwhile, batted .297, while leading the team in doubles (11), home runs (5), slugging percentage (.517), walks (17) and fielding percentage (.991) in helping lead SMU to its first NCAA Division III Regional Tournament berth since 2001. Striking out just six times in 136 plate appearances, Edge — a pre-physical therapy major — was the toughest out in the SMU lineup. She accumulated nine multiple-RBI games and five multiple-RBI games, while reaching base safely in 33 of the Cardinals' 44 games.

Rink is one of four Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference players named to the baseball all-district first team. Joining Rink are Chris Bell (St. John's) and Darren Ginther (Augsburg), Ben Sherer (Gustavus). Edge, meanwhile, is joined by St. Thomas' Michelle Wong and Kristi Hugel as the lone MIAC representatives on the fastpitch softball all-district first team.
