WINONA, Minn. The hot start of the Saint Mary's University baseball team has not gone unnoticed.
The Cardinals, who opened their season with six win sin seven games including a 4-1 mark during their spring trip to Port Charlotte, Fla. hold down the No. 4 spot in the latest American Baseball Coaches Association/Collegiate Baseball NCAA Division III Midwest Regional poll, released Tuesday.
SMU, off to its best start since going 10-0 to open the 1990 season, is one of three Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference schools in the region's top eight. UW-Whitewater (12-0), UW-Oshkosh (5-1) and UW-Stevens Point (6-1) hold down the top three spots, followed by SMU (6-1), St. John's (7-5) and St. Thomas (8-6). UW-Platteville (6-3) and Edgewood (8-6) round out the list.
The Cardinals return to action Sunday, traveling to Decorah, Iowa for a nonconference doubleheader against Luther, before opening MIAC play at home on Wednesday, April 6 against Gustavus at 2:30 p.m.
