DH vs. Concordia has little of everything — everything but an SMU win

MOORHEAD, Minn. — The Saint Mary's University baseball team's season finale against Concordia Wednesday had a little bit of everything:

* Stellar pitching — including a Game 1, two-hit shutout.

* Plenty of offensive fireworks — including 28 hits and 26 runs in the second game alone.

* A first career grand slam home run — one of 15 extra-base hits in the Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference doubleheader.

Unfortunately, the one thing Wednesday's doubleheader didn't have was a Saint Mary's victory.

Concordia rode the two-hit pitching of Jeremy Hinderks to a 2-0 win in Game 1, then outslugged SMU 14-12 in the nightcap.

Hinderks limited the Cardinals to two singles — a one-out, third-inning single by Tony Cicalello (St. Paul, Minn.) and a two-out fifth-inning single by Jose Rueda (Winona, Minn.) — and Concordia used single runs in the first and third innings to post the Game 1 victory.

Hinderks, who finished with six strikeouts, outdueled SMU starter Pat Gornick (West St. Paul, Minn.), who tossed a complete-game six-hitter, striking out six in suffering his fourth loss in six starts.

The nightcap, however, was anything but a pitcher's duel.

The two teams combined for 28 hits — 14 each — and both scored three or more runs in three of the seven innings.

The Cobbers jumped out to a 5-0 lead in the second inning, but SMU bounced back with four runs in the top of the third, highlighted by Matt Rink's (Rochester, Minn.) three-run home run.

Concordia added one run in the bottom of the third to regain its two-run lead, and both teams traded three-run fourths and five-run sixths as the Cobbers held on for the win. Gornick delivered a two-run double for SMU in the fourth, while Nick Winecke (St. Paul, Minn.) belted his first career grand slam in the Cardinals' five-run sixth.

The Cardinals closed out their season with a 7-13 mark in the MIAC and finished 10-21 overall.
